LANA in IMAICHI-CITY
Dear Students of West Middle School from Japan

Document of 16,June,1998

Here I am in the *bedroom* that has been my room here in Imaichi.  I have really enjoyed this room.  It seems very Japanese.  Do you see the special floor?  It is made completely of tatami mats, moved together very tightly.  The tatami is a special floor, made of grasses.  And you NEVER walk on it with shoes.  It would ruin it.  But the handy thing about tatami is that you can also sit or kneel on it without having furniture.  The tatami mats are very comfortable.  And my bed is a futon.  It folds up very easily.  Then when you are ready for bed, you fold it out and stack blankets on it.  It is very comfortable.  I have slept very well here.  The low table can be used as a desk.  The square pillow on the floor is a chair.  There are two *Western* chairs with table near the window.  These can be used for a special tea ceremony.  The doors and windows all slide to open and close.  The doors and windows are covered with rice paper.  Japanese homes only have heat in the *living room* area in one spot under a table.  You really do take your shoes off at the front doorway and put on slippers.  But you take the slippers off before you go into a room or space with the tatami mats and have only socks on.
